For warm weather cities like San Diego, fall is not a big transition fashion-wise. Yes, winter brings some chilly nights in the upper 40s, but fall here is basically still summer in most people’s opinion. This doesn’t seem to matter to a collection of my clients who adore fall and look forward to making that seasonal sartorial transition. Here is what I tell them when we discuss the conundrum of fall fashion in warm weather…
How To Wear Fall Fashion In Warm Weather
There are six tricks to wearing fall fashion in warm weather…
- Wear fall colors in lightweight fabrics
- Wear fall colors in warm weather silhouettes (pictured)
- Focus on cotton sweaters versus heavier wool-based sweaters
- Go for short booties instead of tall boots
- Pair heavy garments with lighter garments (i.e. a bulky sweater with a short skirt)
- Invest in silk/cashmere scarves instead of heavier 100% cashmere scarves

How To Create A Burgundy Monochromatic Look
When creating a burgundy monochromatic outfit, you can match your garments exactly, or play with different tones of burgundy. But however you do it, you want something to divide your top from your bottom when creating a burgundy monochromatic look with separates. This could be a belt or a belt bag. Monochromatic pairings that don’t require a belt include burgundy outerwear with a burgundy dress or a burgundy sweater with a burgundy skirt.
Beyond your separates, you want to skip burgundy shoes when creating a monochromatic outfit. I recommend a nude (pictured), tan or black shoe. A medium grey bootie can also work with this look. Also, I find silver jewelry or rose gold jewelry work best with a burgundy heavy look.

Hi Vanessa—love the monochromatic look in burgundy. What is the brand of the sleeveless blouse you’re wearing? The J. Crew link goes to longer sleeved tops. Thanks!
