Hoop earrings are still the most versatile earring shape today. They never go out of style, or as I like to say, they never get tired. The term timeless couldn’t be more applicable. The first hoop earrings originated around 2500 B.C.E in Nubia, an African civilization located in what we now call Sudan. Hoops have persisted in every fashionable culture since. Today, I put a version of a hoop earring into every client’s jewelry rotation, unless of course, they don’t wear jewelry. What I love most about hoop earrings is how designers constantly energize the hoop shape. One of my favorite twists is when hoops incorporate a snake or are inspired by a snake-like shape. I call these snake hoops.
How To Wear Hoop Earrings
Hoops may be completely timeless and versatile, but people forget that they can get in the way of certain garments. For instance, a fluffy turtleneck neck is a hoop earring nightmare. As is a knitted sweater. You also want to skip hoops when you’re carrying around small children who love to grab shiny things. Those chubby little fingers wrap around that circle so easily and it gives them incredible leverage to tug with all their might. Ouch. Here is a concise list of garments to skip when wearing hoops:
- Turtlenecks
- Bulky sweaters
- Knitted sweaters
Don’t Buy Fast Fashion Snake Hoops
Snake hoop earrings can be just as timeless as regular hoops if you get a high-quality option. Absolutely skip those cheap fast-fashion snake hoops. I detest those creepy, cheap snake eyes or that plastic-y shine on metal-inspired earrings at fast-fashion retailers. I generally feel that way, but an inexpensive snake accessory looks particularly cheap. Instead, go for sterling silver, gold fill, demi, or good ‘ol fully fine hoops. In fact, I often recommend snake hoops from independent sources because they make the edgiest or most elegant options.
Sterling Forever Snake Hoop Earrings
I love that these Sterling Forever Snake Hoop Earrings are thick enough to be seen. These are great if you have thicker or curly hair that thinner hoops get lost in.
